Broken or Knocked-Out Teeth

If your child chips or breaks a tooth, carefully collect any broken tooth pieces and bring them with you when you come into our office. Use dental floss to remove any tiny particles stuck between your child’s teeth. You may apply gauze to control bleeding and an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling.

Knocked-Out Adult Teeth

It may be possible to save a knocked-out tooth if you act quickly and come into our office for urgent treatment. Rinse the tooth gently and carefully try to put it back in its socket, but don’t use any force.

If the method above doesn’t work, place the knocked-out tooth in a small container of salt water or milk and call our office immediately.

In case of a loose tooth after a mouth injury, use an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling and offer your child an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed. If a loose or poking wire comes loose and irritates the patient’s mouth, you can try to adjust it using clean, alcohol-sterilized tweezers. If the wire doesn’t budge, you can try covering the loose end with a tiny amount of orthodontic wax while you wait for an appointment.
